There are several approaches being used in different schools and some of these approaches are also combined with other approaches. The classic approach that is still used predominately in Asia is the Grammar-Translation approach. This approach focuses on learning grammar rules and learning the meanings of the L2 words in the L1 language. This approach has been largely abandoned by most language professionals in America and Europe in favor of the Communicative Approach. This approach de-emphasizes learning grammar rules. The classes focus on spoken communication in real-life situations. Generally the classes are taught entirely in the target language. Oftentimes task based learning methods are employed to force the student to use the language orally in class.
