I already have a history degree, and want to do the PGCE to become a teacher. Does anyone know if I can do this from home? None of the unis that offer this are anywhere near me - any suggestions? :( (Open Uni do it but not in a subject that I want to teach).

Yes, Derby uni do a distance learning PGCE. I know because I am doing a Masters in Education with them by distance, and they initially enrolled me on the PGCE by mistake!

But I did my PGCE at a local college as evening classes - it only took a year. You might want to check that out.

If you are in England then you can do your PGCE with Open University.

However if you are in Scotland you have to attend university to do it. This is because you have to do 18 weeks experience actually working in a school and the universities organise and assess you on this part.

If you can go to uni, It lets you see what the kids are like and you will know very quickly if you are cut out for the job.

I did the PGCE at Strathclyde University's Jordanhill campus. It was a fantastic course and I loved it, especially being in the schools. Its very hands on. If you are in Scotland the fees for the course are also paid for by the grants office.

go to www.gttr.ac.uk they have a list of all available P.G.C.E courses available, so i presume they will have options for distance learning or evening classes. If this fails try and find ur local careers service, they should be able to give u lots of different advice and info on all the courses available.
