I'm wondering about how hard it is to wait tables @ a formal restaurant. It's called a wine bar, actually. They have over 500 wines, and I don't even like to drink. It's a pretty expensive/classy place, and they say the pay is REALLY good, how good i don't know, I don't know anyone who actually works there. I've been a waitress at a breakfast place for 4 years, do you think I could handle it? Is it hard having to learn all the wines and what food goes with what & all that? thanks

I live in Europe and the portions that you receive in restaurants here are much smaller than in the U.S. I think the portion sizes at restaurants in the U.S. play a large role in the obesity levels in the U.S.

I understand that people want a good value for their money when they go out to eat but maybe smaller portions would be good for people's health.

I went to an Ihop and various other diners and it seems that pattymelts generally cost more than cheeseburgers but come with less stuff. It just doesn't make sense to me, maybe I'm missing something.

i have been a surver for six years. i am fairly good at it but i want to know the WOW factor that gets customers to tip higher than they usually would.

when your server approaches you....what do you expect? what would make you tip them very generously?

(i need money to pay my school bills so i need to learn this WOW factor. thanks).

I've read the Q&A about tipping. I would like to add to it by asking the question "why tip at all?" I'd be satisfied if the restuarants just paid the staff a living wage and raised the prices of food across the board. Have we just assumed that restuarants cannot operate this way?

I enjoy eating out frequently and I do tip but I'd be happier if the custom were abolished. I think it creates a perverse incentive in many cases. Wait staff assume they are entitled to a tip under most circumstances? Is that justified? Some of my friends have held these jobs and they told me how they go about their business of serving customers and the prejudices they use to determine the level of service they provide in an individual case. For example, Europeans don't tip, blacks don't tip, rich don't tip, ugly people don't tip. These people have to prove themselves to the wait staff just to get decent service because it is automatically assumed that they will not tip. This is backwards.
