I just want maybe some jello and whipped cream or a slice of cake and one scoop of ice cream. What ever happened to the simple desserts?

I'd agree with what I've seen in the first two responses. Restaurants have a larger profit margin on any 'add-on' item than they do on your entree. The servers also want you to spend more money so they receive a larger tip (hopefully).

I have been to a steak house that served free sherbet with any meal that you bought. If it's a local place talk to them yourself and have all your friends make the same suggestion. If you're at a large national chain, well...goodluck, because it probably won't change.

Because most full service restaurants that serve higher class or fancier desserts do so becasue that is waht is expected of them by their target clientele. If there were more people looking for 'simple' desserts then you would find them on menus. But it might be a little easier for you to say no thank you when the dessert menu is offered and head home for that slice of jello and whipped cream. It would save you a few bucks...

Money. And it's easy with our greedy society.

I am guilty of this. When my husband, daughter and I go out to eat we will always share a decadent dessert. It is something that I wouldn't make it at home. If you are out to eat why not splurge on calories that you wouldn't at home. My daughter loves cheesecake and tiramisu. And me too! Why not share a dessert. We have sugar free jello in the fridge for after school snacks. I like something that I can't, or won't, make at home.

Go to restaurants that serve those desserts you want. If none exist, open your own.
