As a white male living in Tinley Park, I would say of course not! But, before you come, make sure you know where you want to live. South Chicago means a lot of different things.

"South Loop" (Madison to about Van Buren) is the true downtown, lots of college campuses there - like DePaul, Roosevelt, etc..

"South side" goes from van buren to anywhere that is still the City proper south. Some neighborhoods are great, some are not so great.

"South Suburbs" are any place from the end of Chicago (some places it is as south as 95th or 111th street) to about I-80, although I think that line is extending. I 80 used to be the end of Cook County, and anything in Cook was a suburb of Chicago, but now even Joliet is really just a big suburb of Chicago.

If you need more direction, as a life long Chicagoan, I'd be more than happy to help out via email.

Not so much anymore. It's been gentrified quite a lot. My cousin disspelled what I had known from years ago.

Probably not. Some areas are worse than others.

What? You shouldn't be such a stereotype. But to answer your question, if you mind your own business, there should be no problem.
