I have Windows XP.

I went to my control panel
Security

And i noticed my firewall was diabled.

I've been having some problems lately. I had winantispyware downloaded onto my computer somehow .. and it took me days to get it off.

I'm pretty sure i disabled my firewall because i couldn't do something online with it enabled.

My firewall being disabled, could this have anything to do with winantivirus being downloaded onto my computer without me knowing?

Should i keep it enabled? What does it do?

help i have a compaq computer, my software is windows xp. ok my friend came to my house and i caught her looking at cartoon porn now i am not shure if i got a virus or what but the sound on my computer stoped completly and somhow this program called contra virus 2.0 downloaed itself on my computer and it is supossed to kill a virus but i don't think it helps beacuse when i tried to delete the progam it says i have a sighned contract but i did not sighn any thing what do i do? and no matter what i do i can't har any thing on my computer!

Im using Symantec now... but some of my friends said that AVG is better... where else other said Symantec....

One of my friend that use AVG because when he used symantec to scan his lap top, there stated no virus is found, where else when he used AVG to scan... 13 virus was found.

I dun think the symantec im using now is the lousy one.. because my school paid for it.... But seriously my friend tt used this symantec that my school paying but it can't detect the virus...

So seriously I really need a clear answer... Which is better AVG FREE antivirus or Symantec?

I've seen it debated that some claim freeware to be sub par from programs you buy. And some claim freeware to be adequate to normal threats of the internet.

My opinion is that freeware is generally good enough if you already practice safe internet surfing and know things about internet security.

Some of the stuff you buy may or may not be better than freeware (just depends which you buy). If you want complete insurance that your computer is safe, some people claim certain programs are a must.

what's your opinion?

Today, when using Internet Explorer, my Mcafee scan popped up displaying - C:\windows\system\svchest.exe is infected by the new malware.j trojan and cannot be cleared. I immediately quarantined it. Will it still remain on my disk ? How do I remove it ? Mcafee quarantined list shows the file svchest.exe but on deleting it shows that file doesn't contain virus ? My Mcafee susbscription has expired ? how do i know malware has been removed ? please help
Can I install AVG Antivirus inspite of having Mcafee Virus scan already installed in my PC. ? and then again scan for the malware using AVG antivirus ?

so I heard about this virus encrypting files and holding them for ransom for 300 US $

So I emailed them to let them know what I think.

doesn't make sense to me since its web based email.

any one have more info on it or why I recieved malware pop ups?

I'm already running a scan........ so if you could shed more light it would be accepted.

I have heard a lot of bad things about a website called www.tvboxset.com and its various affiliates such as www.tvaddict.com. A lot of them being referred to as scammers or having poor quality DVDs. Is it all truth, rumors, or a mixture of both?

Before the death of my father in one of the private hospital, he gave me the covering documents of the fund deposits in the Bank, as I am his first daughter and he so much loved me with trust that was why he handed this documents to me for safe keeping and advised me to look for a good person abroad who will transfer the fund for me so that I can leave this country.

Currently the amount in the bank which I am having the documents is $4.5m U.S.D. Right now I wish to transfer this fund to you so that you will assist me leave this country and to invest the money into any viable sector in your country, also you will help me to join you in your country for me to start up a new life with you there immediately the fund gets to your account as I am willing to continue with my education too.

Since I am no longer safe as far as Africa is concern at the moment, I wanted to transfer the fund before leaving the country because this fund is my last hope and the only hope I have now. I don't know how we will go about it but I hope hearing from you before I can know which decision to make next. I will like you to stand as the foreign beneficiary of the fund, as I will officially introduce you as the new beneficiary to enable the bank transfer this fund to your name to your country from here before I come to join you. Hey everyone, I have a major virus problem. How this virus managed to slip by Avast, I don't know but It did. I know I have a virus because there are many major problems with my computer now.

These major problems include...
1)Almost a 4 times longer than usual startup time.
2)Xp Themes are disabled, and I'm left with the old Windows theme.
3)No sound whatsoever
4)System taskbar, and start menu are disabled.
5)System restore is disabled.
6) Widows installer is disabled (cant install .msi files)
7)Some of my anti-spyware/adware programs get locked by the system when I try to scan.
8)Nero is disabled, making it impossible to back up my media.

This is by far the WORST infection I've ever had. I would really like to save my computer/media, without having to do system restore. Any help would be appreciated.

Though most of my system tools are disabled I still do have these tools...
1)The internet
2) Avast(pretty useless)
3) A couple more useless spyware tools(Spybot, Ad-Aware, etc)

where my trash icon was. That night I noticed all of my trash had been cleared.The best of all evils is that he was interested in some adult stuff I'd erased but now I'm paranoid and wondering if everything I typed is getting sent to him.Now do I have to make sure I never order anything online so he doesn't get my card #?What's your guess?I know I should have been staring at him the whole time but I had to go pee!

I am wondering if somone can help me clean it up to remove the virus. When i'm on the internet or just listening to the web radio, i get alot of pop ups and my pop up blocker is enabled. i already did a disc clean up and removed the unfamilier programs. i did a virus scan but i'm still getting pop up's (ex: computer doctor program, christian mingle, rocketreward group, i dont even know know wat these things are) please somone help me!!!
