While it is possible that the person knew, and was deliberately trying to infect your computer, it is also possbile that he didn't know. The site may have gotten infected without his knoeledge before you visited it.

It is also possible that the warning you got was a fake. There are several rogue software programs that will false fake virus warnings on your screen, and then entice you to purchase their software to remove the virus - when there really is no virus.

So without having seen what happened, it is hard to say. He could be trying to infect, he could be the victim of someone infecting him, or it could be an attempt to scam you with a bogus virus.

I'm sorry to say that some site have these pop ups as adverts. They are nothing but scare tactics to make you buy a useless 'anti-virus' or 'anti-trojan' piece of software. The worst are the ones that offer to scan your computer for free, find hundreds of suspect files and then want you to pay $50 to 'fix' them. Either rely on your anti-virus you already have installed (you do, don't you?) or go to one of the reputable sites that scan for you like Symantec (Norton).

The person may not have known but, do not, return to the site.
