Hey everyone, I have a major virus problem. How this virus managed to slip by Avast, I don't know but It did. I know I have a virus because there are many major problems with my computer now.
These major problems include...
1)Almost a 4 times longer than usual startup time.
2)Xp Themes are disabled, and I'm left with the old Windows theme.
3)No sound whatsoever
4)System taskbar, and start menu are disabled.
5)System restore is disabled.
6) Widows installer is disabled (cant install .msi files)
7)Some of my anti-spyware/adware programs get locked by the system when I try to scan.
8)Nero is disabled, making it impossible to back up my media.
This is by far the WORST infection I've ever had. I would really like to save my computer/media, without having to do system restore. Any help would be appreciated.
Though most of my system tools are disabled I still do have these tools...
1)The internet
2) Avast(pretty useless)
3) A couple more useless spyware tools(Spybot, Ad-Aware, etc)

I want to introduce not only u but everyone to Microsoft's new security centre. I have used it a couple of times and it has shown the best results ever by any online scanning program. I not only removes viruses/spyware from your computer, but also tunes ur pc for optimum performance.Go to this page, click on safety scanner on left and choose full service scan.

Considering how badly messed up your PC is at this point, I recommend FDISK and a clean install of Win9x, XP, or Vista. Sysrestore can't get rid of a virus that's already hiding within program files on the HDD.
Back up your data files and any programs that you'll need to get online. Make sure you enable the firewall and antivirus. On that note, Avast! Antivirus is one of the better, if not the best, AV progs around. It's a heck of a lot better than any garbage Symantec has to offer (bloatware).
This process will be easier for you if you configured a second and third partition on the HDD that has your system files separate from your data files. Don't try to reinstall the OS over the active (system) partition that's most likely infected with the virus; it will only spread to the clean install and make things worse for you.

That's why I don't use free/cheap antivirus software. Did you scan it with Avast? Disable system restore. Then scan it with the Avast or any other antivirus software you have. Norton is the best way to go. I have tried everything and Norton is by far the best. If you don't disable system restore, then you can't get rid of it because system restore will keep backing up the virus that you delete.

If you have access to a computer with a working CD burner, make a Bart PE bootable CD. That will let you boot your machine and access the files on the hard drive, plus access the Internet so you can backup anything you want to keep. Once you've copied off anything important, reload your computer from your restore CD.

P.S. as you're now aware, today's viruses can mess up your computer even if you're using anti-virus software. They can also mess it up to where it CAN'T be fixed - the only option is reloading. Be extremely cautious when dealing with files you're unsure of - they might be nasties.

If you have your XP disk, insert in disk drive, and select the fix option. Disconnect from internet, delete as much of the virus as you can in add and remove programs, then invest in Norton and let if finish cleaning up for you.

Since you have internet access, I'd suggest trying TrendMicro's Housecall - it does a good job at identifying and cleaning problems, and if there's malware that it can't handle, it can at least identify it for you.
