Security - May 2007

Do I need spyware, IPS and a firewall to get the best protection when I just have AVG anti virus? What do each of these things do? Will these things slow my computer down? What product would you recommend for each of the four things?

I asked this question a couple days or so ago and got an email back saying it was "not actionable" by Yahoo and was deleted. I was not being critical about Yahoo in any way. I just get frustrated when these pages will not close for me, and simply asked for suggestions on how to prevent it or what I should do.

i have both ParetoLogic Anti-Spyware and Spyware Doctor. they both have real time protection. will this cause problem? i heard that having two real time protection products will interfere with each other. is this true? if so what should i do? and are there any other products out there than these two?

Hi,when I do the scan it hangs at c:\windows\NT Service Uninstall$\qjv9j75z.zip .I have left it there for hrs and does not go any further than that part.I have uninstalled ad-aware and reinstalled it but no change at all still won't scan pass that part.I have ran AVG scan came out clean did SpyBot found some cookies which I deleated.Please someone help me,or is there another free program that will scan for ad-ware,Thank You.

Well, leave it to a little brother...seems he has been looking at "bad things" you know what I mean...on my computer and now the comp is acting funny...the settings are all messed up icons are bigger, pop ups, the full shabang...what is some free stuff I can use to get this stuff off...and how do i do it? My default browser was changed from Firefox to IE today and I received updates. I had another default changed as well. Is there anything I can do about this? None of my anti virus programs show a problem.

I think my son is getting emails from his friends who are bulling him. Our desktop computer, which we have had for several years now, was infected with a virus a short while ago. Even though I have no idea how this happened, I need the data on that computer to get recovered. I can't get any programs to open, and the blue screen of death pops up at me after a short while. Does anyone know how to:

a. Recover the hard drive data
b. Kill the virus

Please keep in mind that I can't really get the computer to function outside of starting up and getting to the desktop.

i keep getting these stupid pop ups. i have pop up blacker and all but it doesnt stop them. i also have spy bot, norton anti virus, and mcafee, trying to detect this virus, but they all say my computer is clean. i know for sure i have this virus. how can i get rid of it?

For a safe uninstallation, do i just goto Add/Remove programs? There is no Uninstall exe for Norton and the Norton site just told me to do that. But i just wanted to make sure before i did anything.
