Do I need spyware, IPS and a firewall to get the best protection when I just have AVG anti virus? What do each of these things do? Will these things slow my computer down? What product would you recommend for each of the four things?

The program I listed for you I use myself.

Spyware:

Superantispyware is well known to find spyware that all other miss. Plus you really need to run atleast three antispyware, as one will find what is missed by the others.

Here is a much better antivirus program free from AOL, Active Virus Shield, powered by Karpersky, Labs. Russia, rated # 1 in the world for virus detection. Plus you will get automatic updates every hour on the hour, with a background scanner. Just give AOL, your email and they will send you a key good for one year. After the one year ask for a new key

You can only use one antivirus or you will have serious conflict with your system.

Firewall:

ZoneAlarm, free for home personal use. You get all new versions free and auto updates. http://www.zonealarm.com

All of the above is uses very little resources and will not slow down your pc.

You need all of these to protect your pc. Plus make sure all of your Windows critical updates are upto date.
Minddoctor, France

http://www.superantispyware.com Download their free version and it also comes with auto updates.

http://www.emsisoft.com This company is out of Austria, and they will give you protection from, worms, rouge dialers, keyloggers, trace spyware and rogue cookies.

Ad-Aware Se Personal is a software company out of Sweden and have been around in the spyware technology removel since computers became commercial.

First, yes, you do need ANTI-spyware. (Nobody needs spyware.) You also need an anti-adware package. I suggest Spybot S & D and Ad-Aware. These two free programs don't slow things down because they run only when you tell them to. Here are the distinctions between them:

A firewall protects your machine against unrequested transmissions from other computers and, with the notable exception of the pre-Service Pack 2 version of Windows Firewall, prevents unauthorized programs from sending transmissions out. Usually, the authorized programs are web browsers and automatic updating software, but you can generally authorize any program you want to.

An anti-virus protects your machine against bad stuff that comes in via emails. Viruses usually run by attaching themselves to programs, so anti-viruses also scan programs for telltale signs of viruses. Because other bad programs, called Trojans and Worms, operate much like viruses (even though they may not arrive in emails), anti-viruses often scan for them also.

An anti-adware program generally looks for known programs and program pieces that pop up windows with ads.

An anti-spyware program generally looks for known programs that sit on your machine and spy on you, perhaps logging your keystrokes in the hopes of catching your passwords or, worse, your credit card numbers. These spyware programs then periodically send what they've found to a computer somewhere out there where the information in them can be put to bad use. A firewall may help prevent this communication.

I've never heard the term IPS. Do you mean ISP (Internet Service Provider)?

Note that all these programs work only by knowing what existing malware (the umbrella term for viruses, worms, trojans, adware and spyware) look like, so they have to be regularly updated with the latest intelligence (definitions).

You definitely need spyware and a firewall. My firewall blocks hundreds of hacker probes every day. I've been using PCs since the 80's and have never had a problem with power. Unless you are running critical business software I'd recommend a good surge suppressor, not an IPS (did you mean UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply?). I use McAfee Security Suite but I'd guess they will all do the trick (Norton, ZoneAlarm, etc.)

You absolutely need a firewall and full time (active) spyware and virus protection/
---------------------------------------------

I assume you have a firewall. I have tried six firewalls. I am currently using the Windows Firewall.

Firewalls with inbound and outbound filtering is preferred but all firewalls are easily defeated. Most firewalls will work perfectly until you allow malware to get past the firewall.

Once malware is installed, it can nag you or prevent other programs from running until you open a port (place a hole in your firewall) or allow them access through the firewall or by allowing an exception. They can have names they make them sound like they are a valid programs. They can attach to and use your browser or other programs which have permission to go through the firewall to avoid needing your permission to get past the firewall. They can shut off the firewall, antispyware, or the antivirus.
----------------------------------------------------
I do not use a IDS program per say.

Intrusion-prevention system (IPS)

Intrusion detection system (IDS)

In addition to AVG antivirus, every computer should have the following free programs:
---------------------------------------------------------
Full time (active) spyware protection

Windows Defender

---------------------------------------------------------
Install the following five programs and run weekly or at least monthly. You need all five. They are not a substitute for full time spyware and virus protection. They will greatly increase your protection.

Ad-Aware SE Personal (update + full scan)

Spybot Search & Destroy (update + immunize + scan)
Do not enable Tea Timer and SDHelper

i'm a working laptop or computing gadget forensics expert for the federal government. this is the undesirable information (and it is all undesirable). There are no AV classes that are any stable. Why might I say that. First, via definition, AV classes are reactive, i.e. the extremely in basic terms capture undesirable actors while they have been pointed out. it is fairly analogous to biomedical study on viruses - first you're able to desire to perceive them, and in basic terms then are you able to locate a "treatment". maximum lively viruses (that's purely approximately a meaningless term) have not even been pointed out. besides the incontrovertible fact that, the only extremely shelter thank you to maintain your "stuff" secure is to encrypt your documents (i take advantage of PGP application) and then every physique can "hack" your computing gadget, however the counsel they get would be ineffective. additionally, save all your extremely inner maximum stuff, financials, love letters :-) etc. on a working laptop or computing gadget that (one million) under no circumstances gets on the information superhighway (2) save your stuff encrypted, so as that even if if somebody steals your compture, the counsel would be ineffective (even the U. S. government can not decrypt the documents). i'm constructive that's not the respond you fairly had to hearken to, besides the incontrovertible fact that it in all fairness precise. And do flow look into PGP application on the information superhighway. It has great "white papers" on secure practices, etc. Anti-undercover agent ware/virus/keylogger/ghost classes in basic terms artwork on the barest minimum of secure practices. wish I helped.
