I mean, why does a program have to act as a server to go online...when it works when its not acting as a server? What does it mean?

i have avg free and aol active virus shield. they dont slow my computer down and they never interfere with eachother. i also have mcaffe firewall. is that a good firewall? if not please give me to some free sites that can give me one. thanks

i have just put on a new wireless router in my home. do i really need a firewall established on it? i have a good working antivirus programs on my computers with firewall on each one. DO I NEED A FIREWALL IN THE ROUTER AS WELL? HOW IMPORTANT IS IT?

I have a very expensive item of jewelry on craigslight right now & I've been contacted by no less than 2 different people offering me full price + $200 shipping to send the item to Africa - Nigeria to be specific. They want to pay me through Alertpay (which I have NO idea what that is) or Paypal. I do have a Paypal account but I am leary of giving out the information. What are the chances I'm being scammed & how can they do this through Paypal? Is there any way to cover myself to make sure I don't get ripped off?

I am a dial-up internet user. I have found that even when I am not using the net, there is still data transferring back and forth through the connection. I would like to determine what programs are accessing it. Is there software for this?

Also, I have found that the internet will connect in the middle of the night for no known reason. I would also like to determine what program is causing this as well.

I am currently using XP with Windows Media Center and only using Windows Firewall currently. I have bought Norton's firewall and McAfee in the past and, to be honest, can't stand them. Any suggestions?

I have my windows firewall and PC tools firewall plus on. I downloaded Zone alarm which ended up being too complicated for me because I blocked myself off of some programs by accident. So I uninstalled it. Pc tools seems like a good firewall but I heard some hackers can still get through it and when I do spyware check there's always something that needs to be erased. Can anybody reccomend a strong, but simple to understand firewall. So I can feel comfortable turning my windows firewall off?

My computer is slow and it is by no means a slow computer, meaning at one point it was quite fast. I thought that it might be a virus/spyware so I scan regularly with the follow programs: Norton, Crap Cleaner, Ad aware, Spybot, etc. Nothing helps, though.
