Does requiring a password to initially log onto a personal computer help to protect it from hackers and such or is it just to keep other people in my household from gaining access to my personal PC space?

I was sent the following link:
http://www.stalkertrack.com/
It claims to allow you to be able to track whoever views your myspace page which I think would be really interesting. Is it really just a case of clicking and installing or is there something dodgy about this? Does it allow the company into your myspace account thus breaching your security or is it trustable? Anyone used it before?

People say that a mac can't be infected that's why there isn't a protection thing for macs, but the mac isn't a super-computer that is invincible.

I tried to log in to my pay pal account and a warning message came up saying its security certificate had been withdrawn. I'm using Norton Internet Security 2007 and Norton Confidential so I guess that's where the message comes from.
