One of my computer has a 500mhz chip with 256mb ram and it is fast with antivirus, firewall, anti spyware in it.

Update:- to speed up the boot time just allow the firewall to run and the virus scan in the back ground.

If you don't mind reformatting every time something gets on your computer, don't. But, you will get sick of this by the time you're doing it a couple of times a month. You should at least get spybot or adware se which only slow the computer down when you run a scan. Also, I would go with zone alarms.

get the protection, and by the way thats not a very fast laptop (but hey i build my own at FRY's so the specs are a lot higher)

Zone alram is one heck of a setup. it works great.
The only problem is that it's extremally picky. (it'll take about 3 days of time to get all of settings right but it's worth it

Your not gone to lose any preformance with zone alarm.

If you believe your computer is so fast it can outrun Malware, then don't bother to put that stuff on it.

I couldn't tell you if 2.4 GHz is fast enough. I have a slow old 1.8ghz and it ain't fast enough. Maybe that additional 600 mhz makes the difference.

firewall
just go into start, control panel, security center and turn firewall on.

Between the 3, yes your laptop will go a little slower, but don't you want to be protected?
