Download, update and run Spybot---http://www.safer-networking.org/ . Don't forget to use the Immunize feature.

Download, update and run Adaware---http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/products/select_your_product.php

Download SpywareBlaster---http://majorgeeks.com/download2859.html

SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from ever being installed.

It's main features include:
- Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
- Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
- Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.

Comodo firewall works great right out of the box.

Of course a anti-virus program is a must as well.

I think Norton Internet Security 2006 and up is the best. It has Virus Protection, Personal Firewall, Privacy Control, Anti-spam, and Parental Control. Some people think Norton sucks because it takes a lot of memory on your computer. If you don't want any viruses I would choose Norton Internet Security 2006 or 2007.

Ad-Aware Se is the best. Also, you can go to microsoft's website and do a "Window's Live" scan through the internet connection. It's free, and it scans for viruses, whether or not your computer needs defragmenting, if your have mailware or not, and if you need updates. It can take about half an hour, depending on your computer's size and how many files you have. Ad-Aware Se can be found at www.lavasoft.com. Hope this helped!

TylerBrickley's answer is good for AV and antispyware, but the Windows XP firewall leaves a lot to be desired in terms of both control and effectiveness (it only blocks inbound connections -- if you get a Trojan it won't help much). Zone Alarm is a better choice: http://www.download.com/3000-2092-10039884.html
