Laptops & Notebooks - January 2007

I need a new laptop and am hoping that I can get an inexpensive one for around $600. I'm not willing to go to computerdeals4u.com or any of those sketchy sites to buy one though! Haha. Does anyone know of any legit brands/models (Dell, Compaq, etc.) or sales/discounts at any major stores (CircuitCity, Best Buy, etc.) that will enable me to get a laptop for cheap?

Hello, I just got an acer laptop and upon booting up, It started to download drivers. Right now is says "Process: 8/18, Update VGA" and it has been this way for way over an hour now with no progress. I see another box that says "ATI Catalyst Contol Center" and the green bar stopped halfway and isn't loading anymore. What's up? Do are the drivers incompatible or something? Please, I really need your help. Thanks.

I believe I have recieved a virus on my laptop. I want to delete the entire hard drive and start over from scratch on the laptop. Would this also delete the virus I have recieved?....Also how do I delete the entire hard drive?

I have got the toshiba satilite pro a100 with duo core and finger print reader with1024 ram and 80gb and runs with !!!1.73 ghz!!! ( slow huh)

My computer has a Nvidia GE Force2 mx/mx 400 video card. I have a CAD program that needs a better video card to run it. Can I just replace my computer's card with a Nvidia GE Force 6600 (which is one of the cards the program says will support its graphics) or is there other things that need to be upgraded to run a higher level video card? Is it just a matter of pulling out the old card and plugging in the new one and installing it or is it more complicated than that?

i try to shut down my vaio laptop, but it just freezes at the final blue screen saying:"windows is shutting down"
it never turns off.
i have to unplug or let the battery run out.
i've noticed something else too. my ram doesnt seem to add up.
when you press ctrl alt and delete, the available ram and system cache should add up to my total, right?
my laptop has gotten a lot slower as well. i ran it through all of the standard clean up programs i.e. disk cleanup and disk defragmenter, but it is still very slow. the antivirus program doesnt seem to show anything either. what's going on?

He can read dvd's above 4x if they have data on them but if they are blank and I try to write them (I tried with many programs including nero) I get the eror "illegal disc" ?!? I can write any dvd that's smaler or equal to 4x.

I need your opinion on the best laptops out there. I have been researching them for the last 2 months in hopes of buying one soon. We want at least a 17" monitor, at least 1 GB of RAM, and 80 to 100GB of hard drive space. We don't care anything about playing games on the computer or watching DVD on it or videoing anything (as of yet). We mostly want this for pictures, I do have an I-POD so I have downloaded music to my PC, and surfing the web, power point presentations...we would love Office XP Pro or Windows Media Center or perhaps even Vista.
Brands we are looking at:
Toshiba
Lenovo
Sony Vaiou (sp?)
Gateway
We have looked at MAC but kind of pricey.
Any ideas?

Along with the laptop I ordered from Dell, I obtained this item, not fully recognizing what it does:

Bluetooth Dell Wireless 355 Bluetooth Internal (2.0 + Enhanced Data Rate)

Can anybody provide me insight as to what this is, and what I can use it for? I tried using wikipedia and I still didn't get it. Hopefully someone who actually has this can tell me how it's used and what it's used for.

...and everything went well. However, when I wanted to launch it it says "Error, please insert correct CD-ROM". I get that with a few other games I've installed on my laptop as well (I have a cd/dvd combo drive). I'm not a comp expert so I just need to know if there's anything wrong with my laptop or could it be there's something wrong with my cd-rom? But surely not so many!

(I know, Sims 2 is a bit old by now but finally got around to purchasing it!)

my laptop is about 6 years old, in great condition, but lacks an ethernet port. i use my usb to hook up my dsl, but i like to import photos from my camera, which requires the usb port. i have to take one out to use the other basically, and its a pain. is there a way to get an ethernet port, via a connector for the com port?

The power cord (the charger) to my IBM ThinkPad laptop has a short in it. The wires are fraying near the end that plugs into the back of the computer. Is there any way to fix this, or should I just get a new one? And what should I be looking for? The adaptor seems to be ok; it's just the end of the cord that needs repair or replacement. Because of the short in the cord, our computer is basically running on battery power; I can't get the cord to make the connection to charge the computer. What should I do?? Thanks for any help.
