I bought the machine off ebay about two years ago as refurbished. The error message says windows\system32\config\system is missing or currupt.I have a product key sticker underneath the machine and I think there is a rescue partition .I can't get past the start up screen though.

Yh .. Its not a big problem by the sound of it ...
If you could load the safe mode then do... and install the XP but if u cant ...
Just try to take the root from DOS... youll probs be able to do that ...
It takes a bit of skill thats all.. Its nothing hard to do.
Or you can always take it to some expert to do it for you ... itshouldnt cost you more that £30 to £40.
Good Luck!

It looks as if a dll or similar file got deleted from your laptop. Now, unfortunately you have given us hardly any information, so i need to keep it general. i will therefore assume that you have purchased your laptop legally from a reputable seller/shop and not off the back off some lorry. An operating system is normaly always installed, together with some basic other programs like ms works and suchlike. If you bought that laptop legally you SHOULD have had backup disks along with it or preinstalled on a partition on your harddisk.again, no details from you.
Therefore : 1 your mate has a COPY(Pirate?) of an operatingsystem. well, forget about that one, as the operating system nowadays needs to be activated over the internet in order not to shut down after 30 days.
a solution that is feasible is therefore : either go to the shop and buy a new os disk, which will cost money (big) or you can have a look on ebay for ORIGINAL UNOPENED AND STILL SEALED upgrade from home xp to pro xp , this can sometimes be gotten at an reasonable price. and install that. The upgrade will look for a prior copy of an os on your harddisk , so you need to leave that in place.
Of course you could go back to the place were you bought it from with your purchase receipt and ask them for your intallation disk, but i have the eery feeling that this might not be an option for you.
any way good luck with it.

If your friend has a full version of xp home and not a repair disk you may be able to use it to do a repair install.
There should also be a sticker n the laptop with a windows key it may be possible to reinstall windows and use this key (it is your key after all) however if you get to the bit where it asks for the key and it doesn't work your hard drive will already have been formatted and you will be screwed.

If your laptop is pre loaded with xp the chances are that the operating software is stored in a partition. Try clicking F11 upon bootup. It might do a trick.

You cannot use your friend O/S CD to boot your computer because O/S comes with their own different product keys.If you cannot get your computer in to safe mode then i suggest you purchase a new operating system.
From your explanation i think you are not suffering from hardware problem.NOTE do not open your computer, i strongly believe the problem is not hardware but software
