I just bought a Gateway Notebook for $559 at Best Buy. It has a 15.4" screen, 80 gig. 256 mb. graphics driver.Turion 64 processor, Windows XP, Vista capable, 526 (I think that's the right number) RAM., DVD/CD write-rewriter,, internal wireless , and it kicks butt. My 3 year old Dell desktop won't even load World of warcraft, Intel Celeron 64 not powerful enough. I did a lot of research, and this had all the bells and whistles for the best price. I also purchased a carrying case, and wireless router by linksys. My total was $675, my budget was $700.

okay, I used to work for circuit city and easily the best deals are the open box units. this may be a unit that was pulled out of the box and used as a display item that they are getting ready to sell off because a newer model is about to be put in its place or it could be a unit that was sent back to the store because someone decided that it was not what they wanted, or any number of reasons. these units are still brand new, just that they don't normally come with the box they originally came with. don't just check with circuit city, but check with any of the computer stores, many of them offer the same deals. also check with Dell, they usually sell re-furbished models that are just like new. they come straight from the factory and have been re-done inside to keep them sell-able and fresh.

At the time I checked online for you, I see that Walmart.com, Circuit City and Target.com have models around $600 for you. Assuming your needs is just a barebone notebook for Internet, email, and school, then any of these computers should do it for you.
If your needs are something a little more complex like gaming, programming, graphics and design, then you'll definitely need to get a higher end model.
Good luck with your search!

Have you tried a pawn shop? There's a lot of desperate crack heads out there.
