im in the market for a good, cheap, affordable laptop, to use mainly for school work and stuff like that, any suggestions on what to get? or specifications on what to look for in a laptop?

Dell 1501. It has the basics down to a tee, it can be dual core if you want and it has wireless and can be customized how you wish. Also has a memory card reader for camera cards built-in.

Get a used Mac ibook for under $400. Do a google search for resellers and get a refurbished one with a warranty. You can't go wrong. Their tech support and online support via discussion forums is excellent.

I have a MacBook and I love it.

I'm not to sure they are in your price range though.
