Okay my desktop computer of 10 years finally died! Now I'm really thinking about getting a laptop over another desktop. I'm completely clueless about laptops though? What would be the BEST (inexpensive) laptop to get???

Is a laptop just as good as a desktop?
Can a laptop do everything a desktop can?
Do you suggest me using a laptop as my main computer?
Can you download?
How many bites do you suggest?

A laptop is just a desktop computer squeezed into a very small space. They can do anything a desktop can, plus they have the advantage of being "portable". The disadvantage is that everything is squeezed into a very small space. It means you usually can not add another hard drive or cd drive, add additional hardware, or upgrade as easily as you can a desktop. (But it does not sound like you are a person who does a lot of "customizing" to their PC, so probably would not be an issue for you.)

If you are into games, it is recommended that you do with a desktop. Because they are larger, they can have bigger and better graphic and sound cards to make the game play more exciting. They can also have larger hard drives, allow for more files (music, videos, pictures, etc) to be stored on the PC. With a laptop, you may eventually need to add an external (USB) hard drive for file storage.

If you are using it for e-mail, web surfing, word processing, etc., a laptop is an excellent choice. If you need extreme graphics, or higher than average power, go with a desktop.

Just last year, the sales of laptop exceeded the sale of desktops for the first time. It appears that they will be "the" computers of the future. While slightly less powerful then a desktop, they can do everything the average computer user would need for a computer.

Yes they can.......I now use my laptop more than my desktop. They are more expensive though by as much as 20 per cent over equivalent desktops. I use a wireless wifi in my home and I can now sit wherever I want including the patio.

My next computer will e another laptop but this time I'm going to spend a little more and get a new Intel Mac, I always wanted a Mac but I didn't like the idea of having to learn the OS although I know it isn't that much of a problem since OS X but now with the Intel systems I can run both Windows and OS X from the one computer ----the best of both worlds.

My present laptop is an, Acer 17 inch and I love it.

I would suggest looking into a couple of well known companies like Dell or HP. Where I work we use Dell Latitudes, you would probably be fine with an Inspiron. They generally start around 6 or 7 hundred dollars.
A laptop is just as good as a desktop when it comes to general computing such as browsing, email and general office work. When you want to start doing things such as video editing or gaming, you usually start seeing a basic laptops limitations. Mainly because basic laptops use an onboard graphics processor as do most basic desktops nowadays. So looking into a basic laptop or desktop I would choose the laptop for its portability.

I use a laptop as my main computer at work and I have no issues. Basically laptops and desktops can do the same things as the other there just packaged differently.

I would suggest at least 512Mb of ram, at least a 60Gig hard drive.

If you want mobility, then a laptop is the thing to get. I use a laptop because I don't have the space for a desktop, so that would be something to consider also. You can pretty much do everything on a laptop you could do on a desktop.

concening your old desktop, God Bless His Soul.
I would go for a Desktop, laptops are so expensive, Laptops are not so durable, they're so sensitive, the Battery will Die for sure, after 2-3 years, a new battery will cost almost half the price of a Moderate desktop(+250$), Laptops Overheat, and tend to get broken so often, laptop parts are so expensive; if your desktop keyboard is broken you can go and purchase a new one for under 30$, and you can connect it yourself, ask about how much replacing laptop keyboard, screen, or even a HDD, will cost you, and you need a specialist to fix it, Desktops are so easily upgradeable, if a better audio, video, card, are in the market all you have to do is just unplug the old one, and plug in the new one ...
Laptops are good only for their mobility, so, if you dont HAVE TO, dont buy it, because this mobility will make you sacrefice alot of other great options, and as i stated before, this mobility will end as soon as your battery life time expires.

Wow, too many questions at once...

Desktop is cheaper than laptop, even with LCD screen.
Desktop has standard components, easy to replace/upgrade hard/cd drive, memory, network card etc.
desktop will last longer and perform better because usually has more than one fan and has enough air circulation plus usually its stationary unlike most laptop now a days gets hot and you can drop it by accident.
desktop easy/cheap to fix. not laptop. I had one of customer's kid drop orange juice on my laptop, it went inside through keyboard and fried motherboard that was costing me same as new laptop!
As far as download, performance ... will be about same for same processor size (may be desktop might perform better)
I would suggest laptop only if u have lack of room and planning to take with you while travel.
Retail stores often have open box clearance laptop, which sometimes makes good deal. you can also try dell.com/outlet where they sale refurbished products comes with same warranty and support
