Actually, the question is not which is better, but how do you use the laptop? Generally, if you wish to stand out, Sony, for commercial viability has the most brownies points, But I strongly recommend Gateway for its optimum performance and good technical support.

There is no good PC with Windows on it. If the Company offers you a choice of OSs and it isn't the Linux that Microsoft bought, get that one. Then you will own a PC as well as the Operating System and any files on it.
Free yourself so that you can learn, you cannot learn on Windows, they don't permit that.
Ok rant and flame is over, They are both good machines. buy the one that you like.

Sony is all style...I have been working on Laptops ever since they have been around.. get urself either a Toshiba or a Dell. . belive me.. with 2 Gigs RAM .. u will be like flying.. and that too not soo expensive like HP..
