My computer has a Nvidia GE Force2 mx/mx 400 video card. I have a CAD program that needs a better video card to run it. Can I just replace my computer's card with a Nvidia GE Force 6600 (which is one of the cards the program says will support its graphics) or is there other things that need to be upgraded to run a higher level video card? Is it just a matter of pulling out the old card and plugging in the new one and installing it or is it more complicated than that?

Of course, make sure you have the right kind of connector on the new video card that your motherboard has (PCIe or AGP). Other than that, go for it!

You need to look in the manual to see that if the card can be upgraded. Not sure what laptop you have, as most laptops don't actually have a card, but have the graphics chipped soldered onto the system board? Also, you should check to make sure you have the appropriate amount of RAM, as some applications require a lot of RAM. Check the minimum systems requirments of the CAD application. Just to be sure before you go to all the trouble and expense of upgrading call the 800 number of the CAD vendor and talk to someone in tech support. It might save you a lot of aggravation.

No you pretty much got it. You would have to run the driver disk to make sure you get it installed correctly. The only other thing you might need for CAD might be additional RAM. Its a robust program and more ram may help. You can also do dual monitors with that card. Excelent for CAD to have two monitors. One for specs one for the drawing.
