Get yourself a good software program that will over-write your files at least (minimum of) 7 times. Otherwise, with the right software, an experienced person will retrieve any information you may have on the computer.

Works like this. When you re-format the harddrive, it just erases the first few files on the hard-drive, basically the adressing system which tells your computer where to look for the certain, file. like blowing up your mailbox, but the physical address is still there and can be found. The information is still retained on your computer unless you over-write it several times.

Well, I am going to have to assume you are using Windows, right? So, if you are you go into System Tools and then select Disk Management. There you can run the Disk Cleanup Tool, just follow the onscreen instructions.

There is a great little utility which just happens to also be free. It is CCleaner, which stands for Crap Cleaner. You can get it here:

http://www.cnet.com/downloads

At the upper right of the screen, there is a search box. Put CCleaner in and hit search. A new page will appear with simular utilities, just click on the link for CCleaner, then read the reviews and then download and install it. This utility is very small but powerfull and extreamly usefull. It is a diskcleaner, a startup manager, a Registry cleaner, and a Cookie Manager as well as a super Software Removal tool which lists and makes it possible to fully remove software programs the Windows Add/Remove applet does not list and works even better for all software even those listed in Add/Remove.

I fist checked this out after it was referred to me by a person at a NewsGroup. I checked it out by reading many of the reviews and was suitably impressed by how many people not only use this tool, but how good the reviews are. I have since put my own review in and it is a fully rated review.

After you install the program, just follow the link provided for obtaining the simple directions. When you use it to clean the registry, just remember to save a back up which the utility makes extreamly easy. I back up all of mine to My Documents, and after a few were done placed them into their own folder which the utility automatically opens at each backup. Go into the Options to configure the program to prompt you each time you use the Registry Cleanup Tool and it will automatically open your chosen folder when you click "Yes" to the "do you want to back up thre registry" prompt.

You will be glad to have this tool, and impressed with its full functionality and how uselfull it is. What is also impressive is how small the program is compared to its power and functionality. This program is a real winner and I am still surprised the programmer does not charge for it. Make sure you get your copy before he/she changes his/her mind!! lol
