Laptops & Notebooks - January 2007

I don't understand why my pc uses so much memory. I have IGB of ram. Even when I'm not running any program and the pc is idle, the task manager indicates that i'm using 50% memory, that is about 500MB, even when i exit a lot of programs running in the system tray.

My question is "what would have happened if I was using 512MB ram"?? How can I reduce memory usage?? My pc is a brand new Dell Inspiron Labtop, Centrino duo 1.73GHz, and it doesn't run fast either.

I'm so disappointed.

Hi, I currently got a new laptop a IBM ThinkPad (Model R51) with Windows XP. This laptop has both a Local Area Network (connected), & Wireless Network Connection. I want to know what do I need to buy to get access to a wireless connection to my laptop. I also have a desktop computer with a DSL - sympatico connection (speed stream). So what do I need to buy and how do I hook it up and how much does it cost?? If anyone can help than would be really appreciated. Thanks.

I have a Toshiba Satellite A105-S4084. I bought 100pk spindle of DVD+R from CompUSA. I used Nero Burning Rom 7 to burn movies. But all 5 DVDs I used stopped at 15% and there was an error.

I am looking to upgrade the RAM in my laptop, and I've researched the exact type that I need. However, I am given two compatible options of 2 GB upgrades. One is a DDR2-533 and the other is a DDR2-667. Does anyone know if one is better than the other? The price is only $5 more for the 667, so is the difference really that much more?

I have a laptop running on P3 1,1 GHz CPU. I use it for 5 years, now problem comes. After running it for about 3-8 hours with main supply, it shuts down automatically. I bought a laptop cooler for it. It seems to improve a bit but problem still remains. I also opened it up and cleaned the CPU fan but still cannot get rid of the problem. Have also scanned it with different antivirus programs and defragmented the HDD. What else can I try?

I have already bought another laptop and will sell the old one out through the local auction site. But I do not want to receive complains from the buyer.

My computer is a Dell Latitude D510, and its original specs are:

1.6 Ghz speed, 256 RAM but over the past year I've replaced the original 256 RAM with two 512 cards to give me 1 G of RAM.

I've downloaded a fan moderator lately and it records temperatures of up to 60 * C when running one of my favorite computer games (world of warcraft). The fan stays on forever because my computer just gets so hot.

Is it possible my RAM cards are incorrect incompatible with my comptuer making it overheat? My paging file size is 1532 MB also.

That and my fan is also very noisy now, I think it's sort of going dead but it still does work.

Not sure where to start with this one..

(By the way how much does it cost to replace a laptop fan?)

My daughter (bless her) droppoed my Acer travelmate and broke the screen..
The PC probably sustained other damage, but actually appears to work OK, I have all files, and all programs appear to work OK....

However, It turns itself off straight after the last stage of booting up if I connect an external monitor. The only way around this, I have discovered, is to F8 during boot and boot in VGA mode...And then the graphics are unbearable. I dont have the money to fix it, and as the PC appears to work OK, I just need to be able to get better resolution...The VGA mode prevents IE from displaying webpages properly, etc...

Ive tried playing around with the scren settings under control panel... but no joy.... I guess windows has already set the device to be low res..

I have an IBM laptop. What part of the computer is causing a malfunctiong if I start up my laptop and it wont go into windows? Or if it does go into windows but the screen fades out and the harddrive stops spinning?

I have an HP pavilion 4500 and Im trying to hook it up to my tv via s-video....it displays the desktop on the tv but i have to drag everything over to the tv monitor. How can i make the tv display the same thing as the laptop similtaneously? Thanks for the help:)

Ok when i got my laptop it had a plastic card thing where you insert the picture memory card to keep things form getting stuck in it whne the pic card isnt in. I took it out to put in my pic card and set it down somewhere. I took out my pic card and now cant find the plastic thing. ANyone know how i can replace that or where i can get one???

BTW what im looking for isnt a memory card it is something that came iwith the computer in the shape nad style of a memeory card but completely plastic and is only used to protect the slot.
