I have an IBM laptop. What part of the computer is causing a malfunctiong if I start up my laptop and it wont go into windows? Or if it does go into windows but the screen fades out and the harddrive stops spinning?

The screen fade together with the hard drive stopping indicate a power supply problem. Try a new battery (can cause bad power even if plugged into AC!) or just take out the battery and run on only AC and see what happens.

I'd advise that you'd take your computer to a local IT specialist who can work out what part of the computer is malfunctioning.
There is no way to determine which part is broken by that description.
If the computer is still under warranty, you may need to take it back to the manufacturer. (IBM) Else you may void your warranty.
