My daughter (bless her) droppoed my Acer travelmate and broke the screen..
The PC probably sustained other damage, but actually appears to work OK, I have all files, and all programs appear to work OK....

However, It turns itself off straight after the last stage of booting up if I connect an external monitor. The only way around this, I have discovered, is to F8 during boot and boot in VGA mode...And then the graphics are unbearable. I dont have the money to fix it, and as the PC appears to work OK, I just need to be able to get better resolution...The VGA mode prevents IE from displaying webpages properly, etc...

Ive tried playing around with the scren settings under control panel... but no joy.... I guess windows has already set the device to be low res..

HELP !!

I am going to assume for a second that you are running either windows 2000 or windows XP. I suspect that the problem is related to the screen resolution you have set. The internal lcd panel may well be able to cope with a resolution over 1024 x 768, but some older monitors struggle above this level. Try another monitor if you can, but in the event that you can't do that, try booting in safe mode, then remove the monitor driver from device manager. If that doesn't work, you could try removing the display driver as well, but that is more risky. Otherwise, you may be able to find a replacement LCD panel on ebay. IT@tonicweb.co.uk

I need to ask some questions to offer any help. Is your monitor only VGA or high res? Some very, very old ones were only VGA.
When you say 'if I connect an external...' What happens when you don't connect an ext mon? Does the laptop still shut down?

Assuming that you don't have a very old monitor, and the laptop does not shut down, try plugging the monitor in after it boots. Usually windows boots in VGA mode when it cannot find the correct driver for the video card. Damage to the screen per se should not usually affect the video card, but it is possible. If that is the case, you will need to reinstall the drivers for the card and screen. But the fact that it shuts down if you plug in the monitor is curious.
