Yes, you can transfer files across a USB cable between PCs, but you need a special type of USB cable (a USB crossover cable) and special software to make the transfer.

You can do this only with special cables available in market which fits into USB ports in both the machines, you pc & laptop.

This can not be done with the regular usb cord that might have come with any of accessories. Thus the special cable as a built in mechanism which let both the machines understand each other's interfaces with the help of given software utility.

The safer/cost effective alternative would be to opt for a smaller flash/pen drive which costs identical or less to the special usb cable.

Use a flash disk to connect to the PC's USB port and copy the files to the flash disk. Then connect the flash disc to the USB port of laptop and copy the files from the flash disk to the laptop.

You can Use USB Cable to Connect your Laptop and PC. But it may be little hard to find such a cable and may be on the expensive.

you dont need any software once you get an USB Cable connect it to ur computer you can configure Direct Cable connection using Windows XP in built Network Connection Wizard.

If your Desktop has Network Card then go to any computer shop and ask the Guy to make a 5 Meter cross over cable for you.

Give Ip address as 192.168.0.1 and subnet 255.255.255.0 on one computer and 192.168.0.2 and subnet 255.255.255.0 to the other computer.

Once that done Share a folder on one system and access it from the other system using start > run > \\192.168.1 or 2 \ folder name

If you need any further clarification please get back to me.
