It depends how your laptop was built...

If it's got soldered-onto-the-board memory then it's probably junk. It's probably not worth the cost of replacing the mainboard or board-level-repair of the mainboard.

If all the memory is on memory cards (SO-DIMM or similar) just take the memory out, go buy a replacement memory unit of the same size and put it in instead of the dud one. Then you've replaced the memory that failed... ta-daaa, fixed. It's usually worth expanding the memory to the maximum your laptop will take if it's an old one...

For comparison... my early Compaq M300 laptop had all of the memory on a SO-DIMM (max was 256Mb)... the replacement had 64Mb soldered on and could take another 256Mb SO-DIMM... and the last time I replaced it the NC4020 had no memory soldered on but had 2 memory slots available. So, can't predict if yours will have soldered on memory or not... it's not an age thing, it's a manufacturers peculiarity thing.

If you decide your lappy is not worth repair, consider selling it on eBay for parts... you'll get a few bucks for a working screen (as they are the bits people tend to smash ) depending on the size / resolution / model of laptop it came from. Probably go some way towards replacing the laptop!

A parity error could be as simple as a RAM module coming loose.

Find out where your modules are located and re-seat them in the slots.

Very unusual for a memory chip to go bad.

Also, if you recently added memory, you may have used an incompatible module.
