unfortunatly the most probable thing is overheating, yes the cooler helps but still it is a p3 1.1ghz, and if you run heavy applications or operating systems like windows xp, will make the laptop overheat and as a protection the laptop will shut down.
what i suggest to find out if this is the problem... download this program
http://www.bresink.de/osx/0TemperatureMonitor/download.html
it monitors your cpu and tells u the temperatures. if the temperature is higher than 60-ish, you have a serious problem
and if this is not the case you can have a virus or trojan that is having fun shutting down ur pc,
but i exclude this since you said that it improved after using the cooler

"I have already bought another laptop and will sell the old one out through the local auction site. But I do not want to receive complains from the buyer. " then you can not sell it and be honest.

I'm going to have to go with the power management settings theory. You should probably segment your drive so the scan can work in a shorter period of time. The website thing could be caching, spyware or a general memory problem. You didn't say if you're running XP or Vista.

maybe the settings on the display
configs have been remodified.click startmenu then control panel and explore.hope it helps.if same problems occur, then your laptop is probably starting to wear out.its been five years ,maybe let it retire.or if somebody buys it for a low price tell him about the problem first hand and that thats the problem he"ll be dealing with as long as he uses your laptop.thanks 4 d time to read this.

check the power saver menu, every computer has it. it has a set time to do a certain thing. for example, my laptop when running on the battery shuts down after 1 hours of no use and shuts down 4 hours after no use when its hooed to the powere supply.

It sounds like it might be the power supply, you didn't mention if this occurs while on battery power. I'd take the computer to a shop and have them check the power supply.

That is a result of overheating, make sure the fan is not covered or blocked.
