Laptops & Notebooks - July 2006

I've never done this before. I'm using a Westell model 6100 that came with my Verizon DSL package and a Netgear wireless router. I'm trying to get my connection running to my laptop.

I had everything connected, all the lights that need to be on are, but I cannot get the internet through the router. When I plug everything in as normal, I get internet.

Here's what I do, like it says on the CD. I unplugged the ethernet cable that ran from the modem to the computer and plugged it into the internet port of the router. I then used the cable that was included with my router to run an ethernet cord from one of the router's LAN ports over to my desktop.When I run the internet through the router, however, I get no internet on my Laptop OR desktop.

I even went to the 192.168.1.1 site to connect to the router and finished all the steps. It said that I succesfully completed setup, and that I should have internet access but I did not. Help me, PLEASE!!

I'm leaning towards the MB, but I don't know, I'm just at battle w/myself and can't think of what I want...a new OS, or XP..
and does anyone know if M1210 can handle Vista Ultimate (sans NVidia Graphics)?

Alright. so i have a computer and we still have dial up. we arent getting DSL and dont have a second phone line. when im online it ties up the phone. i was thinking about getting a wireless laptop. if we have dial up, no DSL would the wireless laptop even work or would it still take up our only phone line? any suggestions on what i could do so it wouldnt take up the phone line besides dsl or another line?

My laptop wasn't working so my friend put in a bigger hardrive for me and it worked for a while. Well about a couple days ago, my laptop started making these weird clicking sounds. After a click my computer would freeze and I would have to shut it down completley and restart. Well that happened today and a black screen came up and in red letters it said" Hardrive Not Found". What happened and how can I fix it? I am on my home computer right now NOT my LAPTOP!

I am using partition magic 8.0 and each time that i try to create a new partition on my hard disk, i get an error message, (it think number #2103), that the disk could not be partitioned to the requested size. There is enough space on my hard drive (more than enough) and I have tried to do it both from a FAT32 drive and an NTFS, to no avail. But it is possible for me to shift the available space from one partition to the other.
Anybody got ideas to help me? I want to create another partion to add to the existing two.

I have a laptop, a Compaq Presario R3000 (as pictured in the website below) and I've had it for about a year and a half. As time progresses, it seems harder and harder to move the screen, since the hinges seem to be stiffening up. Can anyone tell me an easy way to ease this, maybe using some sort of lubricant. I've heard of people unscrewing the hinges, but I've looked at my laptop but I don't see any screws...

I have a keyboard plugged to my laptop. I never clean the laptops keyboard and yet friends and family constantly tell me that dust isn't good for the keyboard. I recently saw an ad in an electronics store that offered to clean your laptop inside and out for $40. I used that laptops keyboard and it worked fine.

Is this just a myth or is dust bad for your keyboard. Have any of you lost a keyboard because of dust?

Sometimes when I write my letters type in caps even though my caps lock is not on. When I turn Caps Lock on the letters go back to normal but then caps lock is on. When this is happening and I need to type in numbers it prints ! @ # $ instead of 1 2 3 4 for example. The symbols are typed if the caps lock is on or off it doesn't seem to matter. I don't know if this is a problem with my computer or just some kind of key combination. The only thing that fixes the problem is shutdown (restart doesn't fix it). Also when I click on an icon on my desktop it highlights all the icons in its row and keeps doing and when I go to another row the ones highlighted before stay highlited. I am on a laptop. Can anyone help?
