Tell u what, laptop mostly will last for 3 yrs only. Since u are only using at home, i recommend u buy a desktop! It is the best choice, as desktop can last as long as u want!
This is true. I personally have a laptop, it gives me a lot of problems and now the battery life is quite short and the screen also got problem. Even if u don't bring it along, u also may hit it accidentally. It is inevitable. Trust me, desktop is your choice! Try not buy a laptop unless u really need to bring it along

yes and no. im a laptop user since 1995 and i prefer a laptop coz i work abroad. i also got a desktop at home as a workhorse. i had 3 laptops already and the latest one i bought in 2004 february. all my laptops are acer coz they are cheap and sturdy. i also happened to stay near one of their service center. not that i have any issue with my laptops.

yes - it will. laptops will last you a long time even ten years or more. just choose a well made, robust, branded one. you have to see for yourself and test the hinges, keyboard, the screen, for any signs of low quality build. of course you pay for what you get. a budget of $1500 american will do you just fine.

no it wont. well all laptops are modular in nature so one component will fail after a time. the most susceptible to damage are the mechanical components - the hard disk, the optical drive, the hinge, and the keyboard. rarely that two or more components will fail at the same time. since you have a year of warranty this then you are sure of er.. a year of warranty. then the failure rate will be comparable to a desktop.

what makes me change my laptop after a few years is that technology moves on. your laptop is as good as your operating system. if microsoft burps then open your wallet to upgrade or to replace your laptop. lemme see.. ive used windows95...windows98....windows xp. aha! thats why this is my third laptop!

so my advice, sell your laptop after a year or two then buy a new one to keep up. anyway thats what i do. and nothing beats a laptop in looks and hell the prices are about the same too with the desktop. happy computing

I purchased two compaq armada 7400 pentium 2 laptops from ebay in 2004. They are both running with no issues. Alot of it depends on how much the previous owner used it or if new luck of the draw. Consider this. I work for one of the big banks and we update our laptops every 3 years or so. The used ones are sold wholesale and are then resold to the general public or sometimes they are donated to non-profit orgs

laptops can last as long as ordinary desktop computers, but :-

1. the battery will surly die in about 2 to 3 years(but can still keep using the comp plugged-in)
2. the CD writer in a laptop us usually not as heavy duty as in a desktop (due to space constrains), so it may spoil.
3. difficult to upgrade .
4. expensive to maintain .

so i suggest u get a desktop it is only going to be used at home.

Well mine, a Gateway, has started having problems that are unfixable according to a computer repair company and it has been less than a year since I purchased it.

I also use it just for personal use, and always carry it around in the case.

todays computers are made fairly well. The ONE thing that kills computers is the constant turning OFF and ON of the computer. Heat expands your components and this puts stress on your hardware. The best thing to do to your computer (for any computer) is to take advantage of the snooze/sleep/standby mode. This keeps your PC from completely shutting down.
