so that I can view tables and scroll*; Very long battery-life, good dictionary, thesaurus, find/replace, word-count and preferably a help-section/commands-list; These commands: Cut, copy, paste, single-line spacing, create and modify tables; 100+ MB storage plus USB-port; Windows compatibility; full keyboard (laptop size okay), preferably as part of the device or trouble-free to connect; minimum weight and size; durable, cheap and preferably available second-hand; acceptable condition

*This seems to rule-out AlphaSmart Neo, Palm devices, iPaq, TRS-80 Model 100. If the best-fitting thing is a laptop, then be honest and please tell me. Please can you suggest product-names, and places to buy? For bonus interest (excuse the pun), How much might I expect to pay (e.g. on eBay) for what I want, if I shop around a few days?

I don't think any of those things rule out an iPaq (or probably lots of other PDA's). I can do all those things on my HP iPaq 1910 or even my older 3650. I don't have the fold out keyboard attachment but you can still get them. I would recommend one of the HP iPaqs, someone with an internal expansion slot.

Information Technology isn't always about the latest electronic gadget. Sometimes it's inappropriate to have such complicated functions in so small a space. If you truly want to keep within those size limits, you shouldn't ignore the simple expedient of a pack of 6" x 4" index cards and a pencil (with an eraser on the end).

I have to confess that I did start out to give you a 'smart' answer but, in the end convinced myself that this indeed may be the 'smart' solution to your problem.

One way or another, you are going to have to type and edit your text. It is very little more trouble to write it on cards (which can be ordered or sorted as you wish) and then typed up at your leisure. It is also going to save you quite a bit of money, which is always a consideration.
