Alright. so i have a computer and we still have dial up. we arent getting DSL and dont have a second phone line. when im online it ties up the phone. i was thinking about getting a wireless laptop. if we have dial up, no DSL would the wireless laptop even work or would it still take up our only phone line? any suggestions on what i could do so it wouldnt take up the phone line besides dsl or another line?

First, no matter what you do, using dail up will ties up your phone line. Try this tought, can you make antoher phone call when someone else is using the phone? No. (forget three-way calling, or anyhting like that).

Second, in order for wireless to work, you need to connect "to" something. Like a previous poster said, you could get a wireless card and hope that a neighbor has an unsecured network and leech off of them, or hang out at Starbucks all the time.

"any suggestions on what i could do so it wouldnt take up the phone line besides dsl or another line?"

There is one other solution perhaps for you. Some cellular phone companies now offer cellular cards for your laptop. Generally these are very slow connections (33.6kps) but in some markets like large cities in the US you can get a broadband wireless card.

Having a wireless laptop wouldn't help you in any way towards keeping your phone line free. The wireless feature is just meant to receive wireless internet signals - ie you don't have to plug in the wire - but you still need the internet signal and that you can get only by connecting to the internet - through DSL or dialup or cable.

Your options are getting a dsl or cable internet and if you wanna use the wireless feature of your laptop, you will need a wireless router too. The signal (through a patch chord) from dsl/cable modem will go into wireless router which will transmit wireless signals allowing you to connect to the internet -wireless.

you should switch to dsl it costs the same for the slower dsl as it does for dial up and it is much much quicker
the only way you could benefit from wireless with your current situation is to hook up your wireless adapter and see if there are any networks available for you to use
if they have a lock icon you wont be able to connect to them
it is a secure network
but if there is no lock you shouldnt have a problem connecting
and the best part about that is its free

well yes anything that dials is going to use up the phone line, i would never advise setting dialup via wireless since its a waste of time and money.
yeah i would suggest spending those extra bucks and getting dsl installed.
