Buy the best you can afford You cant really upgrade them other then the memory and harddrive So you should get the best you can afford so 2 years down the line isnt not a piece of junk Check out Dell they have nice ones You might find one for less at places like Best Buy or CompUSA

Just go for the gaming laptops if want the real performance. AMD powered laptops are big monsters in performance. Spend unlimited money for unlimited performance.

There are some models for Extreme Performance.

Alienware-------Aurora m ALX (Unlimited Performance)
Alienware-------Aurora m9700 (Extreme Performance)
Alienware-------Area-51 m5750 (Big Performance)
Dell--------------XPS M2010 (Unlimited Performance)
Dell--------------XPS M1710 (Extreme Performance)
Dell--------------XPS M1210 (Big Performance)

Check these online: http://www.alienware.com/product_pages/notebook_all_default.aspx

Always Get An Windows Vista and EM64T ready Laptop to get Extreme Performance.

Good luck..

Dell- for upgrades, and it's cheaper.
Apple (Ex: MaBook)- for graphics.

I just got a Dell though because I think it's worth more for your money. You could also upgrade the base model to have more configurations.
