I have a laptop, a Compaq Presario R3000 (as pictured in the website below) and I've had it for about a year and a half. As time progresses, it seems harder and harder to move the screen, since the hinges seem to be stiffening up. Can anyone tell me an easy way to ease this, maybe using some sort of lubricant. I've heard of people unscrewing the hinges, but I've looked at my laptop but I don't see any screws...

All laptops have a way of taking off the monitor. Point being, you need to take off the moinitor in order to install a new keyboard so there is definitely a way to take the monitor off.

I will check your model to see how you can take it off, but do not lubricate it. If you lubricate it, then it will get too loose, and you will have problems trying to keep the monitor opened.

I agree, the best way is to loosen the hinges.

To take off hinges:
The screws are located in the corners underneath the rubber/friction pads. Those can be removed by using your finger nails and pulling them out. Unscrew those screws with a medium sized Phillips head screw driver.

My Compaq had the same problem. I think it is just the plastic getting old. Anyway, I sprayed the entire hinge line with silicone spray (being careful not to get it on the screen). It will not hurt any of the parts inside and my laptop opens much easier now.

You can try any light weight oil such as WD-40, silicon, or 3-in-One. But do not over oil! Best way is to put a drop or two on the hinges with a toothpick, then open and close the screen to work it in.

you can use a little sawing machine oil on the hinges you can get it at walmart in the craft dept it is in a white bottle with red writing i think it is about 3.00 a bottle will last a long time .
Open lap top put the oil on the hinges and wait about 10 min and than close you may have to repeat a few time

yes, wd-40 - its a spray thing, i dont suggest you doing it yourself, there are special wires running from laptop's main-board to the screen, i think you'd rather let an expert do that for you cuz laptops are a little sensitive
