My computer is a 6-year old Dell (Model L700C). I have 384 MB of RAM, with 109.7 MB still available. Also an Intel Pentium III Processor Driver and I use dial-up. This computer was lovely when I first got it, but now it's frightfully slow and I'm wondering what I can do about it.

I have recently been told to take my motherboard and PSU out of the case and turn the motherboard on but how do i do this if it not in the case. Do I have to use a screwdriver to short the connection on the motherboard where you connect the on button on the front panel to see if it will turn on the computer.

I was thinking of building computers and selling them on ebay. I would just sell the box not including any peripherals. For the os I could maybe put linux on it so I don't have to buy windows. Do you think I could make a profit doing this?

I am in the market for a new computer. I know NOTHING about them.

I am going back to school, so I'll need a computer that can do the basics: word-processing, spreadsheets, etc. Beyond that, I would like to be able to use the internet, maybe play a few games or manage some digital photos.

My budget is in the $800 range. I just need something basic.

In the past I've used a combo method of getting rid of dust inside my desktop computer with: air can, and vacuuming using the brush extension at the end. I've been told that you need a special electronic vacuum to do this because a regular vacuum can discharge static buildup (or something like that). A friend told me that he always uses a regular vacuum. So I tried it and didn't really make direct contact with the mother board, but just used it over the cables, power supply, case walls, and the heat sink fan over the CPU. I would use the air can to blow off dust on the motherboard itself. So, whadda ya think? If I do it this way, will I still risk messing up the computer, and therefore should buy one of those "mini vacuums" instead? Because the blower can doesn't get rid of the dust. It just blows it somewhere else within the case and on the surrounding floor.

Ok, so at first I had the motherboard, CPU, and RAM installed. PC would only turn on for a split second, then shut down. After removing both the RAM and the CPU I figured out it was because the thermal paste wasn't applied properly.

Anyway, I tried to boot w/o the RAM or CPU and it worked, but after about two seconds I heard a buzzing sound which got louder and louder for about one second, and then the PC shut down. The same thing happens every time I turn it on. What could the problem be? Again, all that is there is the motherboard itself attached to the case.

My computer is acting up badly. I want my computer to run smoother and faster. Its needs more disk space and I need more memory, but at the moment i have no money to buy new hardware. So I went to walmart the other day and I saw some programs that say they can protect against viruses and clean up my system so it can run better. So my question is, what are some good programs to buy to try and fix my computer up a little bit for a do it yourself, computer illiterate person like me?

when I was online earlier, my computer shut down by itself. There was 2 sparks and smelled like something burning. I disconnected everything and took it outside. It wasn't actually on fire, just smells like something burned out. Can anyone think what would of caused this? And can it be fixed? Could it be the power supply? Thanks

While I am still deciding wether or not I should buy an Alienware Rig or not I just want to know if any of you know an Alienware build in between $4500-$5500 USA dollars (before tax).

Best answer goes to the one that can give a build that seems to give the most bang for my buck.

Thanks and God Bless.

I have an old gateway. I thought I would hook it up to install and play some games. I had to reinstall windows 98 and fallowing the installation I couldn't play the games, because the color wasn't correct. I did as the computer said, and went to the control panel, displays and attempted to change the quality. However there were only two options 2-color & 16-color. Both of them are terrible qaulities and I am pretty positive before reinstalling windows 98, the color was fine. Any solutions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I just bought this model and since I started the computer I noticed that the case is really warm (or maybe I must say hot) at all times when it is on. Should I be concerned or since it is a small case it is supossed to be warmer than other computers? I already have a Compaq Evo which is a tower and I never noticed something like this. Thanks for your comments.
