Ok, so at first I had the motherboard, CPU, and RAM installed. PC would only turn on for a split second, then shut down. After removing both the RAM and the CPU I figured out it was because the thermal paste wasn't applied properly.

Anyway, I tried to boot w/o the RAM or CPU and it worked, but after about two seconds I heard a buzzing sound which got louder and louder for about one second, and then the PC shut down. The same thing happens every time I turn it on. What could the problem be? Again, all that is there is the motherboard itself attached to the case.

your computer is NOT a computer as of now, it should be complete, video card, harddisk, motherboard, ram, cpu, ram. these are the basic requirements... without ram it will turn on but turn off after a few seconds, without cpu it will do the same... so complete the set first, doing what you are doing now MAY destroy your motherboard.... friendly advise.. thanks!

If there is no cpu fan connected to the motherboard, BIOS will not detect any rpm and will immediately cause auto-shutdown.

When cpu and RAM were installed and caused an auto-shutdown it appears that the power supply is sensing an overload condition, possibly on one of the voltage rails. Your motherboard might be grounded to the case. Remove your motherboard and inspect the backside for burn marks or burnt odor. If everything looks ok, try again your first set up w/ cpu and RAM but w/ motherboard not touching any metal part of the case. Also insure that cpu heatsink is properly installed and not touching any capacitor or parts of the voltage regulator in the motherboard. CPU cooling fan should be plugged to the cpu fan connector and not to any other connectors on the board.

You might have fried the motherboard by turning it on without a CPU.

You should attach everything (CPU, RAM, Graphics card, IDE cables to hard and CD-ROM) And especially the power cable for the CPU FAN.
It wont boot unless everything is attached.
Hope it helps
