Okay, simple solution to this really. Download and run 'Lavalys Everest Home Edition', google it. Navigate to your motherboard. Take note of your computer model/motherboard model. Go to the pc or motherboard(only if your computer was custom made) manufacturers website, find the product model number on the site, look for BIOS upgrade. Most manufacturers will have released a BIOS upgrade to the original which further supports newer hardware. The bios is like reading a book. You wouldn't know anything til after you've read it. The BIOS won't be able to run new technology, until its got the book that tells them howl;) If you're still stuck, let me know your pc model number and I'll help show you the way:)

No... and even if you do upgrade the bios its windows that has to recognise the RAM to not just the bios (if your mobo only supports 512 megs chances are that your using windows 2000 or ME which don't support more than like 504 megs)

Maybe? But only up to a level that the OS supports. It is easier done with retail motherboards. I'm not too sure w/ proprietary boards. The OEMs seem to make upgrades so challenging because they actually prefer that you just buy a new PC from them.

No it doesn't considering that the amount of ram your computer supports is based on your motherboard. And also your os has nothing to do with your bios.

To answer your question as it is worded... YES!
If your board currently supports 512MB there could logically be a upgrade to let the system use its full capacity in those slots. It can be better explained like a bottle neck feature.

Possibly, but not very likely. To make sure, check with Dell.

Duh?? upgrading bios makes the bios updated not the ram. RAM is a piece of a computer, it's like a long in height and thin with rectangular chip and colored green.
