I am in the market for a new computer. I know NOTHING about them.

I am going back to school, so I'll need a computer that can do the basics: word-processing, spreadsheets, etc. Beyond that, I would like to be able to use the internet, maybe play a few games or manage some digital photos.

My budget is in the $800 range. I just need something basic.

Clarification:

I want a desktop computer. I read that desktops last longer than notebooks.

Ok, since you're looking for a desktop, I'd recommend getting 2GB of RAM and take Windows XP as your operating system (Vista runs slower and has more bugs at this early stage) Since your usage is pretty basic, you don't need the most expensive processor or video card- you can definitely get a nice system within your budget. Note that most advertised prices listed don't include a monitor, so you may need to add that.

The best desktop computers for the money aren't brand names, people get a lot more bang for the buck buying the parts themselves from places like NewEgg.com.

But since you're not a computer person that option may not work for you (unless you've got a techie friend that might build the system for you in exchange for a nice meal) If not, give Dell or some other online sellers (even Ebay) a try. Not the best deals out there, but better than retail ripoffs like Circuit City...

The real catch is software! Since you're a student, definitely obtain the student version of Microsoft Office, it's around $120 compared to over $400 for the regular retail (yikes)
Check on Ebay for "office" and "student", you'll find plenty of sellers. You might also consider a free alternative like StarOffice, if you just want to be able to compose documents and spreadsheets without paying extra $$$.

Also, the first poster made an excellent suggestion- if you don't currently own a computer, definitely drop by an Apple store and check out the Mac Mini... You might wind up preferring that to a Windows-based PC.

You should get this computer. It has 2 GB of RAM and can do more than what you need it to do.

Or just get a Mac mini. But you need to buy your own keyboard, mouse, and monitor if you don't have those items already. The Mac mini with 1 GB of RAM which is good for Tiger is under $700.

Why settle for basic when you can get a full-featured Mac mini for $599?
