I was running a defrag program on a hard drive and accidentally copied some data to the hard drive at the same time. My computer completely froze before I had a chance to cancel it.

When I tried to turn my computer it wouldn't restart and just froze on the loading Windows 2000 screen after 8 bars showed up. I unplugged the hard drive and was surprised that the computer then started up fine. The reason I was surprised is the OS is not on that hard drive.

I then powered up my computer and plugged in the damaged hard drive to an external device so it shows up as an external drive. When I go to it I see it as having nothing at all (0 bytes free and 0 total).

What should my next step be in the morning? Should I run disk check, defrag, or anything else first? Or should I run a disc recovery program first?

Ok, so i got a new game that ran like crap. My friend said he could make it faster. So being retarded I let him have the comp and he called me and said it doesn't work now. I'm like wtf? He told me that he tried installing some more ram that he had from another computer and it was the wrong kind. Then while it was running he noticed that it wasn't reading the ram. So instead of turning it off, he just pulled out the old ram. Now it acts like it restarts every 2 sec. The cd/dvd drives flash like it is restarting itself. I cant even get to the screen to reformat it. It is an hp a530n. I know how to install ram, I didn't know thats all he was going to do. But wtf did he do to it? I called a repair shop, and they said he could of screw up the mother board, (not likely) or he could of "confused" it. How can I de-confuse it? Any help would be appreciated. I don't want to pay $35 for them to just tell me what is wrong with it.

I have not exceeded my memory, system resources, etc. But when I play music, it sounds like the data stream is pulsed, interrupted, or segmented. WHAT IS WRONG?
I uninstalled/reinstalled my sound card.
I ran SPYbot & two other search and destroy
I disk cleaned up
I disk defragmented my hard drive.

Any real ideas???

I have a dell dimension 2400 pc with celeron running at 2.4GHz. Dell's website says it will support a pentium 4 at 3.06 GHz but will not support hyper-threading technology. However, the only pentium 4chips running at 3.06 GHz that I see all support hyper thread technology. What should I do?

I'm considering upgrading to a mother board with a PCI e slot and maybe a bigger power supply. Since I've got an emachine I asked them what I could put in it.They told me to buy an "ATX form factor motherboard" and to purchase and install a new OEM or retail copy of Windows.I've got the windows xp restore discs but I'm quessing these aren't what I need.Any suggestions. And try to keep the price out of the clouds if you know what I mean.I'll probably buy a piece at a time until I get it all together.I have taken my motherboard and processor out before so I'm not completely in the dark here.I'm just concerned about getting everything's that compatible.I'm not a super serious gamer but I do like to play FarCry, Call of Duty,Myst and stuff like that.

Hi. I have a gateway laptop. when I got it, Hardrive Disk carried over 60G if memory. A while ago, I had to do a system restore because of a virus, I even got a CD from Gateway (Resoration DVD). Well, anyway, when I got to start, my computer, right click Locak Disk drive to see how much memory I have, it now says 23.2 G of TOTAL memory. I don't understand why? Anyone?

Ok, first off, how much is the MAC OS Tiger or whatever?

Now, I bought a PC, a Sony PCVRS-420 that came with Windows XP. Can I put MAC OS on this computer? Or do I HAVE to buy a MAC to have the OS? Or how does that work? Just curious how that would go, what I would have to change, do, or whatever.

Hi, wonder if anyone can answer the above. On windows 98 you could just type in command prompt C:\\format C: and completely format the hard drive.

Tried this on my machine which runs xp and it asks me the volume name. I then type in hdd and then it says all my data will be lost. I then hit enter and it tells me that something else is running and do I want to dismount. I click Y enter but nothing.

I do know that by re-installing windows it will give the drive a quick format but thought that by formatting the drive manually will do a better job.

Thanks

In the 286 - 386 (Intel) era, you could get a separate board that in conjuction with a driver, would allow you to add memory. Do they still make a pci version of the card for PIII computers?

*not a question.
I wanted to respond to another question, but it was closed...
You can burn the same label image on a Light Scribe Disc as many times as you would like. The more times you burn the image the darker it will be. The disc automaticly centers itself, so there is never an offset to the image. Hope this helps others looking of information of this type.

I have recently installed a third hard drive using a PCI ATA card. This was working fine until about three weeks ago. Device Manager recognises that the third hard drive is still there, Disk Management recognises this too and shows that out of the 250Gb drive, 153Gb is used. It says the drive is Healthy and Active, but it no longer has a drive letter/name. When i right click on it in Disk Management, the only options available are "Delete Partition" and "Help". Obviously I've checked it as the primary slave, again it is recognised by the system, but no drive letter is assigned. It's almost like the computer says "I know it's there, I know there's stuff on it, nothing really is wrong, but no, you can't access it". Other than a full re-format and then trying to file recover the entire hard-drive, anybody got any suggestions??? Please???

I have had this problem before, reloaded windows and then it would be ok. Now it is so bad I struggled even to load the boot disc. I took out the usb card, ethernet and firewire cards and even installed a replacement graphics card, but made no difference. I took out the 2 x 256mb memory chips and tried each one in turn. made no difference, still kept turning off before i could load the boot disc. So obviuously no memory, grapics card etc problem.

I notice the big fan built into the power supply wasn't turning and seemed a bit stiff to turn. Eventually got it to load the boot disc and windows and seemed to be ok until i tried to load my internet disc then it switched off again. Couldn't get the pc to stay on more than 2 minutes without it turning off. Have re-set bios settings to default and reloaded windows again. PC was fine this time until i connected to the internet and it switched off again.

Power supply problem maybe????? Solution......Never buy a packard bell pc

Ok, this is kinda related to my first question as well. I have taken care of most of my start up problems, but it is still slow, from signing in, til I get online. Now, my start up items, how do I know what I need and don't? They are a bunch of letters thrown togther that look foreign to me and I don't know if I require it to start up or not? Or it is if you don't know what it is, you probably don't need it checked? Is there a site that can identify what these things are in my start up? I have checked very few to start but what if there is more? Thank you for any help! I appreciate it a great deal.

I want to connect my Virgin (Telewest) digital cable box to my pc using a scart (to s-video) lead so that i can watch TV on my pc. I don't need a PVR (planner) or anything else like that but i do need to be able to capture reasonably good quality video to avi/mpeg files. I have looked into buying a TV tuner card with s-video input and although this would work, i'm sure there's a cheaper option because i don't need the 'tuner' capability (just scart input).

If someone could suggest the appropriate hardware and software it would be really useful. I don't mind shelling-out a bit more for the software if it will make things easier and/or better quality.

Cheers!
