I have had this problem before, reloaded windows and then it would be ok. Now it is so bad I struggled even to load the boot disc. I took out the usb card, ethernet and firewire cards and even installed a replacement graphics card, but made no difference. I took out the 2 x 256mb memory chips and tried each one in turn. made no difference, still kept turning off before i could load the boot disc. So obviuously no memory, grapics card etc problem.

I notice the big fan built into the power supply wasn't turning and seemed a bit stiff to turn. Eventually got it to load the boot disc and windows and seemed to be ok until i tried to load my internet disc then it switched off again. Couldn't get the pc to stay on more than 2 minutes without it turning off. Have re-set bios settings to default and reloaded windows again. PC was fine this time until i connected to the internet and it switched off again.

Power supply problem maybe????? Solution......Never buy a packard bell pc

1. You sound like you are discribing a virus. If I am right the only solution is download this program http://download2.lsoft.net/killdisk.zip
Put the program on cd or floppy. Boot from that disk, choose your hard drive and erase everything on it.

Reason why reinstalling windows didn't work:
Some virus' can hide in a part of the hard drive that isnt affected by anything except a complete hard drive wipe.

What this program is:
This program deletes all info on a hard drive by putting 0's in every spot (like drenching a picture in black paint so you cant see the picture, only black). No virus can get past program.

2. If the fan isn't working replace it. If this is the problem it keeps turning off because it is starting to overheat and to keep itself from melting it is designed to turn itself off after a certian temp.

Check if the other way works first because this one you will have to buy parts. But either way it shouldn't be too hard to fix.

The best way is to download Ccleaner here http://bitly.com/UrALrK

Or you can go on Windows operating system locate the command prompt and go there to do the following:
Create a Recovery file of system and date it today.

Then begin by;
delete the 'Temp' folders..they have hidden subfolders so you need to set the attributes in order to bypass this. For each subfolder delete all cookies and rubbish left behnd after install-uninstalled programs. Do a 'dir' command to check your progress. Make sure the 'Temp' file is empty.

goto c:\windows\prefetch and delete everything in there..no exceptions

goto c:\windows folder and delete all the '$' files that have been installed by updates. They can all be succesfully deleted and just take up disk space.

Locate the Internet Temporary Files..Check to see how high the saving level is..some have it set at 30 days..but that stores faaaar tooo much data..though it slows down the system overal. Keep this to a minimum..suggest 2 or 5 at most.

Delete all 'cookies' all those you don't need.

Locate the windows directory and go through the folders you know and those you don't need. Check this once a week at least. Some programs will install under XP as NT and older systems where there is no check of systems weight.

Check to see that system files have not changed since last booting. Things like .ini files or .bat are important items.

Check for 'Hidden Directories' all over the disk...do this at the command prompt:

dir *.* /ah wil show these hidden directories

Check the 'dir' command for all parameters

So..
The first thing to do to speed up pc and get rid of malwares and viruses is cleaning the registry with a program like CCLeaner http://bit.ly/UrAwNg
I guess it's the sotware you need.
Have a nice day

yes the power supply is the problem. it is getting hot and shutting down. it has a thermal cut off in it such as does you motherboard does in the bios. being you have the PB, i think the power supply is only a 250 or 300watt one in your tower..
don't listen to it being a virus. you don't have one!!!!!!!!!!11

The problem is with the powersupply.
change it and try again. also I'd request you to format your whole hard disk and/or make a new partition (if u believe its a virus related problem). but I hope changing powersupply will solve your problem.
Thanks.
