I currently have a celeron d cpu running at 2.4 GHz. Will a Pentium 4 cpu run on this systemand if so what type of socket does it support?

more than likely its a 478 ... if you can find 1 it should work ... you could always take the heat vent and heat sink off .. it will say which socket it is on the socket itself

Well first a Dell Dimension 2400 is a couple years old, but it is still a good computer. You may want to add more ram like 512MB or 768MB if you had a 256MB. A new CPU (has to be the same Pentium 4 or celeron) , if the mother board supports hyper threading technology (sorta dual core Pentium 4 processor). If it only has a CD-ROM drive then upgrade to a CD-RW/DVDplayer.

this appears to be a socket 478 mother board so you will need to get a s478 pentium 4 cpu it is an intel 845gv boardhttp://www.intel.com/products/chipsets/845gv/index.htm
