I've taken a 30GB hard drive out of a older computer which has Windows ME, and attempted to conect it via jumper. I've connected the slave drive according to the lable on jumper cable but when I boot I get an error saying that it can't find the operating system. When I disconect the main hard drive the slave drive works on its own, what gives? Do I have to format the Slave hardrive?

Here's my problem...I have recently been having quite random troubles with my laptop computer. It started when I tried to turn it on a few weeks ago and it would power on but the screen would remain black. About one out of 50 tries or so it would actually boot. To resolove this I decided to reinstall Windows and format the hard drive when I was able to get it up. When I tried to install my copy of XP that came with the computer I got some error right at the start which I didn't write down, and now i wish I had. Anyways, I tried a different copy and that installed fine. After Windows was done installing I began reinstalling software, and I frequently have been getting errors saying the file may be corrupted. Not just one file either, almost everything I install. Some of it I can just try again and it works, some I will continue to get the same message. My best guess is bad sectors on my hard drive, but I want to be sure before replacing it. Anyone have a better guess?

I just want to work with easy applications like office, photoshop and explore the internet to download music files and movies. I don't want to pay more money to buy something expensive that I won't use. Is a Intel Celeron Prescott J336 - 2.8 Ghz with 512 RAM for 230 euro ok, or should I start searching for something better?

I am considering to buy a high end INTEL PC with Dual core 2.6 GHz, 2GB RAM, 120 / 160 GB HDD with Linux O/s - which might cost about Rs. 50K.
Is it worth going for a WORKSTATION with P4 3GHz, 512 MB RAM, 80 GB HDD which will cost me almost Rs. 65K
Applications are mostly programming in C / FORTRAN, AutoCAD, Data Base, etc.. not for gaming.

I have a Dell Dimension 4400 and it currently has a Nvidia Gforce 2 64mb video card. I bought an ATI Radeon 1300 256mb. The box said that I need a stronger power supply so I got a 400 watt one. I deleted the driver, shut the computer down removed the old card, installed the new card closed up the box plugged everything back in. I hooked everything up and turned the computer on. The screen when black then went into multi-colored vertical lines on the screen. I did everything that the install book told me to do. What is the problem? Thanks for your help.

If you were to build your own computer and deciding on the storage... Would you rather to have one big harddrive and run everything from it, or have 2 smaller drives, one of which would carry the OS and programs and another - everything else? Why would you choose it to be so?
What brand do you consider to be the best in harddrives and why? Maxtor, Seagate, HP, WD, anything else? Any known problems with any of them? I'd like to get something like 1 of 150GB or 2 of 100GB or so, in the range of $1/Gb or less, with SATA interface.
PS. Please don't answer anything like "I'm using Maxtor DiamondMax 9 and it works great for me". I'm looking for the answers of people who live and breathe computers.

I just installed 2 512mb memory cards in my desktop. I will be doing something, then the computer restarts. It never did this before I upgraded. I had a 256 and 128mb cards in before. Windows goes through a hard drive check, fixs the problem, then says a serious error occured. Then it will do it again a little while later.. Do I have a bad memory card? Or do I have bad file?
