Prior to downloading something on your machine you should do a system restore, provided you have a system restore feature on your machine. If you do, go to accessories, system, and system restore. Put in the box something like, "prior to downloading x, y z." Then click on restore. It will set a point on your machine that you can restore it to if something happens with the download, say you get a virus or start having problems. I've done this many times and it's a great feature.

You should go to start, from start click on control panel, from control panel you should click on Performance and Maintenance. In the top of the corner on that page there will be the link to click on to do a system restore. I hope this helps.
