Here's my problem...I have recently been having quite random troubles with my laptop computer. It started when I tried to turn it on a few weeks ago and it would power on but the screen would remain black. About one out of 50 tries or so it would actually boot. To resolove this I decided to reinstall Windows and format the hard drive when I was able to get it up. When I tried to install my copy of XP that came with the computer I got some error right at the start which I didn't write down, and now i wish I had. Anyways, I tried a different copy and that installed fine. After Windows was done installing I began reinstalling software, and I frequently have been getting errors saying the file may be corrupted. Not just one file either, almost everything I install. Some of it I can just try again and it works, some I will continue to get the same message. My best guess is bad sectors on my hard drive, but I want to be sure before replacing it. Anyone have a better guess?

Your guess may be right. This can happen due to bad sectors of the compute. The following is the path to activate the disc checker

- Open “My Computer”
- Right click the OS drive you want to check (for example C: if you install XP to c: drive)
- Select “Properties” from the menu
- Click “Tools” tab
- Press “Check Now” button
- Make sure you thick the two options to “Automatically fix errors” and “Attempt to recover bad sectors”
- Stat scan

This will try to solve the problem for you. But as I have experienced, you can get a small relief from this problem if your file system is NTFS. FAT32 is very bad for bad sectors.

No, it does not. you could attempt reinstalling the operating equipment. XP or Vista will experiment the force for blunders earlier to installation. they'll "tag" the undesirable sectors so as that no tries are made to write all the way down to them contained in the destiny (therefore not generating blunders). this is about all you could do with out appearing a low element format (which does not fix them ... purely hides them completely). FYI - low element formatting isn't for computing gadget novices. you could very surely render the HD completely unusable. regards, Philip T

First of all install Norton anti virus or Macafee or any other Anti virus on ur laptop. Do not use pirated softwares as they may be infected and may damage ur HDD.Also use disk Defragmentation to look for Bad sectors in ur disk.

there are quite a lot of hdd diagnostic software ...try one of those.... also try installing an older version of windows then try to fix whatever it is to fix.... also are you 100% you formatted the hard disk in the right way? i wouldn't bet on it. format it again.
the way it sounds ...it like your hdd is not the only problem.

try to defragment and scandisk your PC.

Click on the Start menu, Programs, Accessories, System Tools.

Better yet, have it checked by a professional or by the manufacturer.

Use the defragment application in the system tools then defrag your drives. The tool will show you the results you're asking.
