Both have their advantages, and it depends what models you are comparing to what. Just naming the brand is way, way too broad of a comparison.
AMD has ruled the pack for a long time with it's Athlon 64 and Athlon X2 processors. Intel's P4 was bulky, sucked a lot of power, was a bit pricey at times, and ran pretty hot. AMD was the better alternative in almost every benchmark category except audio/video editing.
Now that Intel has released the Core Duo (for laptops) and the Core 2 Duo (for desktops), the tables have turned completely. AMD's Athlons are nowhere near the performance of the Core Duos. In addition, the Duos run faster at slower speeds, suck a lot less power, and run cooler overall.
They will be more expensive than the Pentium 4 and Pentium D, but it's well worth the investment at this point...

The "respective" cost? That heavily depends on which CPU you're talking about my friend. Like I said, just naming the brand isn't nearly enough. You have to list the model. There is a wide range of prices out there for each category.

Stay away from Mac, it is not gaming machine at this point.
I presume the guess is between Athlon 64 and Core Duo, go Athlon, there was a question on dual core a while back and the article says Intel has not yet perfected dual core technology compare to AMD.

don't know the costs... but i think the AMD processor is better. they are both great and the only things that make the differences are the games that ask for considerably more resources than movies or other applications that are ...insignificant reguarding the processor's capacity
