I just installed 2 512mb memory cards in my desktop. I will be doing something, then the computer restarts. It never did this before I upgraded. I had a 256 and 128mb cards in before. Windows goes through a hard drive check, fixs the problem, then says a serious error occured. Then it will do it again a little while later.. Do I have a bad memory card? Or do I have bad file?

looks like you may have a bad memory
Check the spec on www.crucial.com enter your pc model or motherboard and it will give you the memory that you should be getting for your computer then check the spec on the website against the memory you got,

These answers are close but the reason why it is restarting and shutting off on you is either because 1 of the memory banks is bad on the mother board or either the BIOS cannot handle both of these 512's. I would say go to the motherboard manufacture's website and download the latest flash update for your BIOS. That should give it the ability to recongnize and operate with this new memory. Enjoy

It may just be a matter of a poorly seated memory stick.... But I agree with the previous answer which suggests removing one stick at a time to see if you have a bad stick...

You can also run a memory test such as http://www.memtest86.com/#download0 MemTest86 to see if it turns up errors...

Do you know if your system can handle two (2) 512s?

A couple of years ago when I wanted to put more into my Pentium, my computer guy said my PC couldn't handle it.

He spoke in "tech speak" so I don't understand the problem, but he is a well respected businessman from whom I bought my PCs for 10 years.

I don't know who you can talk to but you might want to check into this. It will take more knowledge than I have.

It's possible that one of the 512 sticks is bad... I would try running with just One at a time to see which one causes the crash. You can take the bad stick back to where you bought it.

Check to see if u have accidently touched the power to your graphics card. My friend had that happen and it would reboot every so often. the power must have fried the graphics card.l

memory is not the problem. once the problem is memory or any parts your pc will not boot. maybe the problem is inside the hard disk. try to scan your disk for error.

good luck!

most likely the memory, try putting the old memory back and see if it still happens.
Also it might not be defective, but just incompatible or too slow for your computer
