HP / Compaq - because of its international warrenty
Dell - because it's reputation in customer service
IBM - a sturdy machine
Alienware - perfect gaming machine
Apple Mac - perfect sturdy machine in the world if u can leave windows
For Laptop - buy Dell - Centrino Duo
for desktop - buy HP/Compaq - Core 2 Duo or similar
Alternatively, if u r planning to buy now... wait for the Core 2 Extreme. DO NOT BUY PENTIUM anymore... it's old. Duel Core from intel is the latest.. and they are set to launch 4 new processors.. they have multiple computing power at any given time.. it's far better and generate less heat and uses less power.

HP is just everwhere. They have a retail marketing strategy. Dell is everywhere too, they're just famous, but recently stopped gaining market share. Compaq because it's relatively inexpesive. The 'average Joe' computer probrably would be like a Dell or HP. Sony is more pricey, but has more features 'n power, and elaborate cases and accessories.
Apples? They're a good idea, (I'm using one right now) but they're not for everyone as they'll be frustrated with the lack of Apple equivalents of Windows based software.

There are many choices out there, but get one that is easily repaired using generic parts.
Dell makes reasonably priced PCs, but if you want to increase RAM, call Dell. Want a replacement ink cartridge, Dell.

To me brands don't really matter. you get what you pay for. The best way I can explain it is using cars; do you want an escort, mustang or lincoln.
