You need the "device driver" for the sound portion or sound card on your PC. This requires a bit of research. If it's an OEM pc like Compaq, you can find the driver on their site. Look under Support, drivers, etc. and specify the model of the PC.

If you have a generic PC, find out if you have sound on the motherboard, or use a sound expansion card. Does the speaker plug into the base motherboard, or into a card that sticks up?

If a card, search for the driver for that card. You must identify the make and model of the card. If a motherboard, the make and model will also be needed.

A good source for the multitude of drivers for discrete components PCs is:
http://members.driverguide.com/

The other way to find them is to Google the thing. Then, type the exact model no., along with the keywords download and driver. This can be haphazard and time-consuming, esp if you have no experience finding drivers, so I recommend using a wizard like at driverguide (the link I provided).

I know this sounds terribly complicated, and to be honest IT IS, even for someone experienced. The moral is, don't start from scratch unless you absolutely have to but when you do, MAKE SURE TO BURN A CD with the drivers on it!!

Once you have found the driver for your sound card or onboard sound, usually it's just a matter of unzipping the archive and running the SETUP.EXE. If no setup is provided, use Add/Remove Hardware, select specific location and browse to whatever INF file is provided.

A restart may be required, but usually NOT with sound devices.

FYI, if you find you're having trouble getting online, the network driver may also be needed.

insert ur motherboard disc if u hav one that u got when u bought the system and almost it will install everything needed! if not try this
1. go to hardware settings
2. try updating sound card driver
3. if not corrected try removin the device by uninstallin driver
4. restart the system
5. automatically detects the new hardware the sound card
6. now reinstall the driver

if all these are not the problem check the socket of the speakers and check whether it is switched on!

Look in the device manager for any question marks related to audio. Right click "My computer", go to manage, click on device manager. If there are yellow exclamation marks you need to reinstall sound card from manufacturer website. If it is internal sound card, go to motherboard manufactuer.

If all is well,

Try playing a .wav file from your computer first as a test.

Look in the control panel under Sounds and find anything related to mute.
