i hate my linksys wrt54g, so im looking for something else. the budget range is to about $150... perhaps more if i can be talked into it. i really dont know much about them, so ill tell you what i have.
wireless:
2 vista laptops (1-64, 1-32)
1 sony psp
1 wireless pda (i think its a palm pilot 5..its about 3 years old)
wired
1 sony ps2
1 vista desktop
1 win98 desktop (still the best windows ever!)

i want to be able to share all files between the computers, including large media files.
i have a two story home so need something with a good range, the office is about as far away as you can get from everything else.
all the pcs have firewalls... and i think all the wireless cards are 'g's.. if that makes any sense to you.. and i dont want a router that will leave my psp out.
i have a speedstrem 5100 dsl modem.. that i dont think i can replace.. but if i can, id love too.
I dont know the difference between g's, n's, d's
... ill add more details to this question...

I justpurchaced a new HP desktop with built in wireless lan and an antenna connected.

I have Linksys router with 5 latops that already succesfully access the router at any time of the day.

The computer along with this laptop are located about 50 feet away.

Problem is the desktop wont pick up a signal what so ever.
The laptop get a full signal.

The desktop did get a signal of a measly 2 bars but worked great for 20 mi. Now nothing comes up.

How can i connect the computer to stay connected to the router?
The laptops do this seamlessly witgh much better reception rather than no reception at all. Yet the desktop has its own external antenna!

I am moving to Goleta CA and am going to order high speed internet from Cox. However, the price is high and together with the installation and the cable modem from Cox, i have to pay $200 for the first month. Can i buy a cable modem elsewhere myself? If so, which one should i get?
Also, me and my roommates have 3 computers in total, which means i need to get a router. Which one would you recommend and does it matter if my laptop has window vista and my roommates' have xp?
im a total dummy for computer.

I recently upgraded to the BT Home hub, which after reading several forum posts about it was a bad decision.

I have now installed this and connected my PC (via USB) and XBOX360 (via ethernet) to the Home hub, l and although I have to wait for my line to be optimized, everything seems to be working well.

However, when I check on y network status, using the BT Broadband Desktop help utility, it shows I have an UNKNOWN DEVICE connected to the router along side my PC and XBOX360.

I have tried to obtain assistance from BT themselves but they simply told me to ignore the unknown device, as it will not cause any harm!!!!

Does anyone know how I might find out what this is or remove it from my network?

Thanks.

I need the exact configurations for the phone to be able to connect to the router.
The router is set to:
Wireless network mode: Mixed(meaning wireless-G/b compatible)
Security Mode: WPA Personal
WPA Algorithms: TKIP
Authentication Type: Auto

I have set my router to ask a computer who tries to connect to it for a password. Is my p990i compatible with this?

The router is linksys Wireless-G.

I'm using Hawking HWR54G Hi-Speed Wireless-G Router Revision M. There's a CardBus PC Card that goes along with it.
My desktop computer is connected to the router and it works fine.
I'm trying to set up the laptop but it says "Network cable unplugged" and "Wireless Network Connection 5" (card) not connected.
It's worked before, but at that time, someone configured the router and stuff for me. Recently the laptop was erased (don't know if that means anything) and now I have it back and I can't get the internet to work on it =(

See my neighbour right across from me can get wireless internet since there no trees near them but we can't because all the trees next to us. So what we want to do is share the internet that our neighbour will be getting. You see we need a powerfull router that can go atleast half km around or even less. It's need be able to have a low lang time at less then 10. So does anybody have any clue what router i could use for this. Maybe even one that would have an antena outside.
