i am abroad and want to use wireless networks in the area, but most of the signals are very weak. how can i boost it? can i get some kind of aerial to plug into my laptop?

Your wireless card will need to support external connections.
You can also use external bridges with high power transmitters and receivers with external antennas

Yes certainly make sure the N type router is given an N type adapter on the computer upstairs. However, D-Link also sells a high gain antenna that can replace the external antennas on one or both the router and/or the computers adapter. The antennas really make big difference.

Buy equipment called WAPs (Wireless Access Points). They are basically antennas

If your using the standard antenna that came with the router, do a search on ebay for a 12db antenna.
